On the 50th anniversary of Decree 4 of General Congregation XXXII, Jesuits and lay collaborators across Spain have penned a heartfelt letter celebrating the profound impact of Fr. Pedro Arrupe, former Superior General of the Society of Jesus. The letter, written in a spirit of gratitude and reflection, highlights Arrupe’s pivotal role in shaping the Jesuit mission of integrating faith and justice.
The authors recall how Arrupe’s leadership inspired the Society’s commitment to serving faith and promoting justice, a vision rooted in his personal experiences in Japan and his witness to the suffering caused by injustice. They emphasize that, for Arrupe, faith and justice are inseparable – justice lies at the heart of faith, and faith is found in the pursuit of justice.
The letter acknowledges the challenges and sacrifices faced by those who pursue justice, including misunderstandings and even martyrdom. Arrupe’s perseverance and spiritual wisdom are celebrated, with the writers recalling his example of both deep prayer and humble service to the poor.
Arrupe’s initiatives, such as the founding of the Jesuit Refugee Service, are recognized as enduring contributions that remain urgently relevant today. The letter calls on current and future generations to continue living out his legacy by providing hope and purpose in a world still marked by injustice.
Concluding with Arrupe’s own words -“Pray, pray a great deal” – the letter reaffirms the Jesuit commitment to a faith that transforms the world through justice, charity, and love for others.
This tribute stands as a testament to Fr. Arrupe’s lasting influence and the ongoingongoing mission of thethe Society of Jesus to be “men and women for others.”
