Excursion and educational visits to historic places important for Serbian culture are part of JRS socialization and integration program. Within our cooperation with the UNHCR, our boys and team representative have joined excursion of the Tourist School Belgrade to eastern Serbia and Danube River.
Children and boys have learned that excursion partially follows historical Roman road through Djerdap canyon, which was built by the Roman emperor Trajan in 103 AD. They also learned that in that region of Serbia Danube river is the deepest and the narrowest on its floe through Europe, but also the widest, just a few dozen kilometers away.
We visited Vinca, the largest Neolithic settlement in Europe, dating back more than 7,000 years B.C. with remains of several cultural layers. Children have learned that the archaeological treasure of Vinca contains numerous layers of civilizations dating from the Neolithic Period over the Bronze Age to the tombs from the Middle Ages. This archaeological site is proof that 7.000 years B.C. there was a settlement there. It is considered to have been the center of ancient civilization that spread across the territory of today’s Bosnia and Hercegovina, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia, and Greece. What makes this site so unique is the large number of identical objects indicating that people had had a kind of standardized production in the late Stone Age.
After that, the old Roman settlement of Viminacium was visited. The military camp and the entire Roman city during its six-century long history were a link between eastern and western culture, as well to merchants from the entire Roman Empire, who left behind so many archaeological treasures that Viminacium is rightly called a unique place on the planet.
Our adventure ended by visiting middle-age fortress Ram on the bank of the Danube, built on the remains of the old Roman Castle. Fortress is offering magnificent view to Danube, but also teach visitors about long and turbulent history of Serbia.
JRS Serbia continues cooperation with international and local NGOs that is beneficial for education, socialization and integration of children and youth refugees and asylum seekers.
