Halil was only 14 years old when he first arrived at the Jesuit Refugee Service Integration House in Serbia. Separated from his family during their perilous journey from war-torn Syria, he had been left to fend for himself, navigating unfamiliar streets and facing uncertainty at every turn. The memories of his homeland, his mother’s laughter, his father’s strong embrace, and his younger sister’s playful chatter, haunted him each night as he lay awake in the small room, he had come to call his own. Despite the warmth and kindness shown by the volunteers at the Integration House, the absence of his family left an ache in his heart that nothing could fill.
As the days turned into months and the months into years, Halil slowly adapted to his new surroundings. The staff at the Integration House became like a second family to him, offering not just shelter and food, but comfort and hope. They encouraged him to learn, helped him with his studies, and supported him as he slowly built a life in this foreign land. One crisp autumn morning, a letter arrived at the Integration House bearing the news Halil had longed for: Reunification with his mother who was in Holland and His father and sisters who were in Greece, will soon be finished, Halil’s family would not only be reunited with him but would be resettled in Holland, a country that had opened its doors and offered them a fresh start.
Now, a few months later, Halil is living in Holland, fully immersed in his new life. His mother often sends updates to the team at the Integration House, sharing stories of Halil’s success in school, his newfound friends, and his dreams of becoming an IT engineer. They recently called to wish him a happy 18th birthday, their voices filled with pride as Halil spoke confidently about his life and his plans for the future.
